The Likes of Buknoi

The VW beetle. Originally produced by the Germans from 1938 up to year 2003. My bug’s mechanic (Manong Teddy), said that I made the right choice (apart from the many obvious reasons), for it’s a woman’s car. Reason?, its air-cooled, well, for most vehicles are water-cooled. So, there is no need for tedious water-filling of its coolant.
I have long been fascinated by this lovable turtle-shaped car. I remember when I first rode a bug, I was in high school at the time, when our neighbor-stall’s driver tagged me along to fetch his boss at our town’s inn. I was surprised to realize that, to get to the backseat, you need to bend the front-passenger’s seat. When I was at the backseat, Manong Buddy turned-on the car stereo, put-on Roxette’s beat, and there I was, stunned. I rode with many different cars before, but that one amazed me the most.
I promised myself then, that if I am to have my first car, it’ll be a beetle. Whenever I see one, my desire to own a bug became more intense.
Until I got one. I first named it VOXY, but later found out that it’s not a vixen. It’s eyes seemed glare yet stern. I have asked friends about their hunch on its gender. Consensus proved that it’s a He, and so I named him Volknoi and his Filipino name is Buknoi.

The ‘greatest’ challenge of owning a bug is the mockery. In the Philippines, whenever people see a bug, they will salute at it, and if anyone among the friends do not gesture the same, they'll be hit on the forehead. Filipino people of all ages do this, no matter how stunning or unattractive your bug looks (I have proven that).
Apart from the ridicule, its spare parts may have been worn out for a decade of use. Nonetheless, it is so easy to learn driving, handling, penetrate a traffic with a VW beetle. Well, the consolation is… as what Maggie’s father said in the infamous Herbie: Fully Loaded, “These are great. Take care of the engine, they run forever.”
